Minister commends Danish PVC recycling technologies

The Ministry will not, however, provide funding for construction of full-scale plants

31-10-2001

“It is highly gratifying to see that a Danish company has successfully developed a method for managing one of our problematic waste fractions in a very environmentally sound way. Watech A/S has carried out impressive development work. They deserve much credit and praise for their efforts.”

According to his consultation document (see the Danish version here), this will be the Danish Minister for Environment and Energy’s opening statement when he presents his reply to the Danish Parliamentary Environmental and Planning Committee on 1 November. The background for this statement is the fact that the Committee has asked the Minister to give a more detailed account of his view of the opportunities for realising the PVC recycling technology developed by Watech A/S.

Process development began as far back as 1993, with the NKT Research Center in charge of the project. Now, the project has progressed to the point where a pilot plant in Stenlille has been running successfully for more than a year. At this plant, PVC waste is converted into calcium chloride, coke, and oil, and the heavy metals are separated from the rest of the waste. Watech A/S is now looking to find investors to fund the construction of a large-scale plant. This would make it possible to utilise fully this method of PVC recovery.

In the consultation document, Svend Auken states that he would be most willing to support this project, as he feels that Watech A/S has arrived at a splendid and very carefully thought-out solution. The Minister does, however, emphasise that the Ministry of Environment and Energy will not provide direct funding for construction work. “The road ahead in the immediate future,” says the Minister, “is to call upon the Danish Environmental Protection Agency to intensify the efforts made so far to find investors.”
