Svend Auken has now signed the Statutory Order on Lead

Lead stabilisers in PVC will now be phased out in the course a few years

14-11-2000

The days of the heavy metal lead are numbered, writes Minister for Environment Svend Auken in the press release Out with lead, released by the Ministry of Environment on 14 November. In the press release Svend Auken is cited, as saying amongst other things that the new Statutory Order makes Denmark a leading country and that Denmark’s wish to regulate lead has sent an immediate signal to other countries. Svend Auken believes that, amongst other things, the Commission’s work on the Green Paper on PVC illustrates this.
The Statutory Order on Lead will shortly be published in the Danish Law Gazette, after which it will enter into force on 1 December this year. Denmark has taken some of the EU Science Committee’s criticism of the content of the Order into account and is now to send the signed Order to the EU. If the EU finds that Danish legislation on lead contravenes EU regulations, legal action could be considered.
The Statutory Order on Lead has been long in the making, therefore deadlines for the phasing-out put forward in previous drafts have been postponed to later dates. The following will apply for lead stabilisers in PVC:
Mouldings for doors and windows
1 December 2001

Other products
1 December 2001

Roof guttering and drain pipes
1 December 2002

Roofing sheets
1 December 2003

Pipes
1 December 2003

Electric cables, that currently form part of other products
