The World’s leading authority on cancer changes opinion on phthalates

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassifies DEHP to the group of substances not carcinogenic for humans

29-02-2000

The World’s leading international authority on cancer (IARC) has recently confirmed that the most commonly used plasticiser in PVC, DEHP, cannot be regarded as carcinogenic. The IARC, which comes under the WHO, has therefore reclassified DEHP to the group of substances that are not carcinogenic for humans.

The European Commission, and most other international authorities, have not considered DEHP as carcinogenic for many years. However, on the basis of earlier studies on rodents, the IARC has classified DEHP as a possible carcinogenic for humans.

On the basis of new and more comprehensive studies, the IARC has now concluded that the results achieved on mice and rats cannot be applied to humans.

The IARC resolution was taken by a group of 28 experts from 12 countries at a meeting in February in Lyon, and it was welcomed by phthalate manufacturers. “Allegations that DEHP causes cancer have received considerable media coverage and have unduly alarmed consumers,” said Dr David Cadogan, Director of the European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates (ECPI).
"We now have a clear and unequivocal ruling from the World’s leading authority in the area, and this confirms that DEHP cannot be regarded as carcinogenic,” he said.
