The EU financially supports PVC Recycling Plant with 3 million Euro

Chemical Recycling of PVC Waste is close to a Realization in the Stigsnæs Industripark

19-06-2003

The recycling company of RGS90, that is the owner of Stigsnæs Industrimiljø, has been given more than 3 million Euros as a EU support to test a plant for recycling of PVC waste. The plant, that will become a capacity of 12,5 tonnes PVC waste per hour, will be built at the Stigsnæs Industrimiljø by Skælskør. The process has showed during tests that it can treat all kinds of PVC waste.

Along with the Stigsnæs Industrimiljø, the RGS90 has succeeded in developing a process, during which all components of the PVC waste are being extracted and recycled. The project started in 1998. The core of the process is a decomposition of chlorine from the waste in order that the substances can be recycled.

The salt, that is extracted by means of the chlorine, will be recyclable and could be used in the PVC industry for the manufacturing of new PVC, or it could be used as thaw salt for roads. The oil fraction can be used as raw material in the chemical industry. Positive test results indicate that the heavy metals can be extracted for following utilization. The firm, inorganic remains of minerals will be used as a raw material in connection with the manufacturing of a sandblasting product. As a matter of fact, the PVC plant is closely connected to a plant at Stigsnæs Industripark, that utilizes sludge for the sandblasting product, Carbogrit.

The development of the new concept for recycling of PVC waste at Stigsnæs has been made in close co-operation with the Danish Environmental Agency and the Danish and European PVC industry, which have also been supporting the project financially. The annual capacity of the plant is abt 100.000 tonnes PVC waste, which is resulting in the extraction of 25.000 tonnes oil and 42.000 tonnes salt.

In connection with the support from the EU, RGS90 has made a press release enclosed with a more detailed description of the process, that in the future shall be recycling PVC waste at Stigsnæs
