The latest news letter from the Chlorine Chemistry Council is reporting on a press conference in USA, where the vice president of the Chemical Manufacturers’ Association, C.T. Howlett, presented the results of a new CMA sponsored report. There has been made a study, whether workers in the PVC industry are exposed to a risk when manufacturing vinyl chloride monomers (VCM). VCM is a substance that is generated during the production of the raw material PVC. At the press conference in Washington D.C. Howlett said that “the report confirms what we have already been knowing during the last twenty five year that VCM is carcinogenic to humans”. But he pointed out that the security measures that have been taken over the latest twenty years, have been protective to the workers, that are working with VCM. Howlett also said that the new production methods and improved techniques, that have been established in connection with new security regulations, show that by means of proper risk assessment and scientific examinations you can be assured that the industry both can and will tackle the risk in connection with VCM.
