![]() Phthalates, in the amount that are to be found in the food today, do not present a problem 13-11-2003 In connection with the publication of the report “Human Exposure to selected phthalates in Denmark” of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration the media wrote among other things erroneously that a considerable source to phthalates in food stuffs is phthalate plasticized PVC packaging. The treatment of the report of the media has now caused the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration in a press release to define the position of the Danish VFA to phthalates in food stuffs. In the press release it is stated that eighty per cent of the phthalates, that the Danes are consuming, come from the food. They relate from environmental pollution and only to a small degree from PVC packaging. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration points out that the phthalates are not making any risk to the health in the amounts that are to be found in food stuffs today. And the Danish VFA draw the attention to the fact that the amounts in the food are decreasing. Even though the authorities are not considering the phthalates in food stuffs a problem, it is pointed out that there is still, however, a reason for keeping focus on certain weak groups like infants and pregnant women, and measures to secure a higher margin of safety should be effected. In its press release the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration informs that among other things they have planned a monitoring campaign towards phthalates in milk. The monitoring campaign shall be introduced during 2004 and secure that the use of milking tubes are not causing phthalate pollution of milk.
