      Danisco developed Alternative to Phthalates

Grindsted soft-n-safe plasticizer now allowed in EU

24-01-2005

The big Danish manufacturer of ingredients for the foodstuffs industry, Danisco, has developed and been licenced to market within EU a new plasticizer for PVC. The plasticizer called Grindsted soft-n-safe is based on a vegetable oil, that is already in use as a foodstuffs ingredient in margarine and chocolate. According the press release from Danisco in connection with the launch of the new plasticizer, potential customers within the plastic industry tested the product and confirmed that the plasticizer can be used without any necessary change in the existent production line of the companies.

Moreover Danisco informs in a data sheet that the price for the new plasticizer will be about three to four times higher than the phthalates, which shall be replaced by the new one. Due to the noticeable difference in price, it is in the first place within the range of medical devices, toys and tubes for the foodstuffs industry that the new plasticizer will be of interest.

Danisco can manufacture the new plasticizer immediately, and the company informs that the potential increase in the sales at Danisco could be around 70 million €. The production of the Grindsted soft-n-safe is going to take place at the Danisco plant in Grindsted, Denmark.

In connection with Danisco’s launch of the Grindsted soft-n-safe the PVC Information Council Denmark can inform that the phthalate risk assessments, on which the toxicologists of EU are about to put the finishing touches, have just indicated that it could be problematic to use phthalates in some kinds of toys and some kinds of medical devices. Thus the Grindsted soft-n-safe could show to be a interesting phthalate alternative within these particular product ranges.

Besides Danisco develops and produces foodstuffs ingredients, sweeteners and sugar. The concern has well over 9000 employees all over the world and the sales were 2 billion Euro in 2004.
