![]() The hospitals shall now report to the Minister for Health about the use of phthalates in medical devices 21-03-2005 On 2 March 2005 Steen Gade from the Socialist People’s Party put a question to the Minister for Health, Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Steen Gade would like to know whether the Minister for Health intends to secure that medical devices plasticized with phthalates will be phased out. Steen Gade has now had a reply from the Minister of Health. The Minister says that in the first place medical devices are regulated in an EU directive, where requirements to the manufacturing of the devices are saying that it shall be undertaken in such a way that risks, if any, are acceptable compared to the advantages, the devices are offering the patient. Moreover, the Minister mentions that it is to be expected that in the EU there will be made proposals for a limitation of the application of DEHP. DEHP is the most used type of phthalates in medical devices for the time being. The Minister for Health, however, also says in his reply to Steen Gade that his general understanding is that Danish hospitals have reached far in the phase out of phthalates in medical devices. Predominantly, e.g. phthalate free devices are used in the departments for premature babies. Since the Minister for health, however, wants a comprehensive overview of the actual application of medical devices containing phthalates, he now asks the hospitals to inform, whether they use phthalates and in which products. When the information is obtained there will be made a health technical assessment as to which treatments are possible to carry through by means of phthalate free devices. ![]() Join our news alert list by sending us an e-mail to pvc@pvc.dk - marked "News" |
