The efforts made must solve the problems associated with use and disposal of PVC
04-12-2000
The Danish Parliamentary Environmental and Planning Committee has just received a reply (in Danish) to seven questions that the Committee asked the Danish Minister for Environment and Energy [at the time], Svend Auken, about PVC. These questions primarily concern the efficiency of the collection activities established by the industry’s recycling company, WUPPI A/S. The Minister was also, however, asked about whether he agrees with the Danish local authorities’ waste company, Reno-Sam, which has recently advocated a phase-out of PVC due to problems with separation. Svend Auken’s reply included a statement to the effect that a general phase-out of PVC is not the way to go. Rather, efforts should concentrate on solving the problems associated with use and disposal of PVC. As regards the current proposals for landfilling as an alternative to incineration, Mr Auken states that this will not be a sustainable solution in the long term. Work must be carried out to develop new methods of waste management that aim at utilising the resources contained within PVC. At the same time, negative impacts due to environmentally harmful additives should be reduced. In his reply to the Danish Parliamentary Environmental and Planning Committee, Mr Auken also states that as 1) quantities of PVC waste are expected to grow in the years to come, and 2) it is not possible to keep PVC out of incineration plants altogether, efforts must concentrate on substituting those PVC products that cannot be separated.
